Open Letter to Pat Robertson by Hillary Kobernick
Today marks two years since Haiti’s destructive earthquake. And it is just shy of two years since Pat Robertson, vanguard of the Religious Right, made one of the most infamously ignorant comments in recent Christian history. Among the things he said was that the Haitians, in their 19th century struggle against French colonialism, had, “sworn a pact with the devil.” (If you’re feeling brave, check out more of the interview here.)
I thought perhaps he needed a little lesson in reality, so I wrote this poem, just less than two years ago, “An Open Letter to Pat Robertson.” (The recording was done by Austin Thomason, who still does some recording projects in the Seattle-area. If you’re trying to do professional recording, I highly recommend tracking him down.)
still relevant… still.
You’ll also recognize a girl who travels by the fact that she’s always amazed at the world around her, no matter if she’s in her home town or in a place that’s totally new. She sees beauty all around her, not just the ones featured in travel guides or shown in postcards. A girl who travels has developed a deeper appreciation for life. She won’t judge you, or pressure you to do the things you don’t want to do. She know too much about the importance of identity and self-efficacy, and she will appreciate all the more if you won’t pretend to be who you’re not.
She knows she’s been to a lot of places, but she’s humbled by the fact that the world is still a big place and she’s only seen a smal part of it. Seeing this in her can make you feel all right with yourself too; there’s no need for you to do more, to be more. What you are is enough.
